Terms of Use
SmileLock
These Terms govern your use of the SmileLock app (the "App"). By installing, launching, or using the App, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, please stop using the App.
1. Relationship to Apple's standard EULA
The App is distributed under Apple's Standard End User License Agreement ("Apple EULA"). By installing and using the App, you also agree to the Apple EULA. These Terms set out App-specific rules in addition to the Apple EULA. In case of conflict regarding App-specific matters, these Terms take precedence.
Full text of the Apple EULA: https://www.apple.com/legal/internet-services/itunes/dev/stdeula/
2. What the App does, and what it does not guarantee
The App inserts a smile check before and during your use of the apps you select. It switches locked apps to a smile check through Apple's Screen Time frameworks and detects smiles through ARKit face tracking.
- Not a blocking guarantee: The App is a tool for interrupting your own habits, not a lock that cannot be defeated. Screen Time authorization is granted as
.individual, which means you can disable it yourself at any time from iOS Settings. Do not rely on the App where a genuine restriction is required - Not for supervising others: The App is designed for managing your own device. It is not a parental control tool and cannot restrict another person's device
- Launch-time checks need your setup: The smile check that runs when you open a locked app depends on a Shortcuts automation that you create yourself. iOS provides no way for an app to do this on its own. Without that setup, only the smile check after extended use will appear
- No guarantee of smile-detection accuracy: Detection accuracy varies with lighting, camera angle, physical condition, individual facial differences, and OS version. We make no warranty as to accuracy or speed
- Not a medical or therapeutic service: The App is not a medical device and does not diagnose, treat, or prevent any condition. Any effect of smiling on mood is not guaranteed. If you have concerns about your health, please consult a medical professional
- System requirements: The App runs only on iOS 26.1 or later, on an iPhone that supports ARKit face tracking. Some or all features will not work on other devices
3. Prohibited conduct
When using the App, you must not:
- capture face data of third parties without their consent
- infringe other people's portrait rights, privacy rights, or other rights
- investigate vulnerabilities in the App, reverse-engineer, analyze, or modify it (except to the extent permitted by law)
- attempt unauthorized access to the App or attempt to bypass its authorization mechanisms
- interfere with the App's operation or place undue load on the App or related services
- otherwise act in violation of laws or public order and morality
4. Pricing
The App is provided free of charge, with no in-app purchases and no advertising. We may introduce paid features in the future. If we do, the terms will be presented before any purchase, and features already available to you will not be taken away without notice.
5. Disclaimer
- "AS IS" and "AS AVAILABLE": The App is provided on an "AS IS" and "AS AVAILABLE" basis. We make no warranty as to fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, completeness, uninterrupted operation, or freedom from defects
- Damage from a smile check appearing: We are not liable for any damage caused by a locked app switching to a smile check at an unexpected moment, including missed messages, interrupted work, or lost opportunities. Please do not lock apps you may need in an emergency
- Damage from a smile check not appearing: We are not liable for any damage caused by the App failing to interrupt an app after overuse, failing to detect a smile, or returning you to the wrong app
- Data loss: We do not guarantee that smile logs, settings, or app selections stored on your device will not be lost. The App does not sync them anywhere, so uninstalling removes them permanently
- Third-party service changes and outages: The App's features may become unavailable due to changes, outages, or discontinuation of Apple services and frameworks (iOS, FamilyControls, ManagedSettings, DeviceActivity, ARKit, Shortcuts, App Store). We are not responsible for the resulting impact
- Cap on liability: To the extent permitted by law, our total liability to you is limited to JPY 3,000
- No liability for indirect damages: To the extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect, consequential, special, or incidental damages or loss of profits arising from use or inability to use the App
- Consumer-law exception (Japan): If you are a consumer under Japan's Consumer Contract Act, the limitations above do not apply to damages caused by our willful misconduct or gross negligence
6. Eligibility and use by minors
- The App is intended for users at least old enough to obtain an Apple ID under Apple's terms
- If you are under 18, please use the App with the consent and supervision of a parent or guardian
- The App is not primarily intended for children under 13, and its Screen Time authorization is for managing your own device only
7. Modification, suspension, and termination of the service
- Minor changes: We may modify the App to fix bugs, improve features, or respond to specification changes in Apple's frameworks. For minor changes, we may not provide individual advance notice
- Material changes: For material changes such as suspending core functionality, we will make reasonable efforts to notify you in advance via in-app notification or the store page
- Permanent service termination: If we permanently terminate the App, we will make reasonable efforts to notify you at least 30 days in advance via in-app notification or this site. This does not apply in the event of unforeseen changes to Apple's services or frameworks, legal requirements, or other unavoidable circumstances
- Restrictions after termination: If you stop using the App while apps are still restricted, remove the App's Screen Time authorization from iOS Settings to clear any remaining restriction
8. Changes to these Terms
These Terms may be updated as needed. Material changes will be announced inside the App or on the store page. Updated Terms take effect from the time they are posted on this page. If you do not agree with the updated Terms, please stop using the App.
9. Governing law and jurisdiction
These Terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of Japan. Any dispute regarding the App is subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the Japanese court having jurisdiction over our location, as the court of first instance. If you are a consumer under Japan's Consumer Contract Act or other applicable mandatory law, this section does not override rights granted to you under such law.
10. Acceptance
By launching and using the App, you are deemed to have accepted these Terms and the linked Privacy Policy. If you do not accept these Terms, please stop using the App.
