About hueday9

hueday9 is an iPhone app where one color a day is decided from the date. You collect nine photos of that color and finish a 3×3 page. On any given day the color is the same everywhere in the world.

FAQ

The color of the day

Q. How is the color decided?

A. It is computed from the date. No server is involved, so everyone gets the same color on the same day, and it still works with no connection. The same color never appears two days in a row.

Q. Can I choose the color?

A. Not for the color of the day. That is the point: opening it is the small reward of the day. Once you finish today's page you can draw a fully random color as many times as you like with "one more color".

Q. The date changed but the color did not.

A. Close the app and open it again. If it still does not change, check your device's date setting.

Q. My friends and I are out together and keep photographing the same things.

A. Tap "spin again" after the color is revealed. Each tap moves you to the next color. Everyone starts from the same color of the day, so only the person who landed on a duplicate needs to tap, and there is nothing to agree on beforehand. No location and no network involved, and twelve taps bring you back to today's color. On days you do not tap, the color is the same for everyone in the world, exactly as before.

Collecting photos

Q. My photo does not match the color exactly.

A. That is fine. The app does not judge whether the color matches. If it looks like that color to you, it goes on the page. There is no right or wrong.

Q. Can I avoid using the camera?

A. Yes. You can pick from your photo library, including all nine.

Q. If I quit partway through, do I lose the photos?

A. No. Photos are saved to the device the moment you take or pick them, so they survive quitting or a crash. Reopening the app offers to resume where you left off.

Pages and album

Q. Where do finished pages go?

A. They are saved to the album automatically, newest first.

Q. How do I delete a page?

A. Open it in the album and choose delete. To remove everything at once, use "Delete all data" in Settings.

Q. Do I lose my pages if I delete the app or switch phones?

A. Not if the device is signed in to iCloud — they come back when you reinstall with the same Apple Account. The backup lives in the private area of your own iCloud, where the developer cannot see it. On a device that is not signed in, everything stays on the device and goes away with the app.

Q. I would rather not use iCloud.

A. Open the iPhone Settings app, tap your name, go to iCloud, and turn hueday9 off. Everything stays on the device from then on. To remove a backup you already made, use "Delete all data" in the app's settings. Every feature also works on a device that is not signed in to iCloud.

Q. How do I show a page to friends?

A. Export a share card, which is a single image with the color name and date on it, then send it through the share sheet to wherever you already talk. No other users exist inside the app.

Notifications

Q. How often will it notify me?

A. Only if you turn it on, and at most once a day. It is off by default and stays quiet on days you have already finished your page.

Privacy

Q. Are my photos uploaded anywhere?

A. They never reach the developer or any third party. The only time anything leaves your device is when it is signed in to iCloud and a finished page is saved to your own iCloud. See the privacy policy for details.

Q. Do I need an account?

A. No. There is no login mechanism.
